Grown exclusively in the area around Mount Vesuvius, these oval piennolo tomatoes are traditionally harvested whole, on the vine, and left hanging from balconies in the sun to dry. Piennolo tomatoes are sold at a premium, due to being grown in such a confined area in soil formed by thousands of years of stratification of lava at a high altitude. As a result, in Naples, these tomatoes are also referred to as 'mountain' tomatoes. Recognised as one of the foremost agricultural products of Campania, Piennolo cherry tomatoes from Vesuvius were awarded DOP status in 2009.
These tomatoes are used extensively in Napolitan cooking for their versatility, most often used on pizza.
